Semiconductors drive everything from consumer electronics to life-saving medical devices. They’ve moved past being a core pillar of modern industry and become something we depend on for almost every aspect of civilization. To say that semiconductors are merely important is to drastically underestimate their role in our lives.
That’s not going to change anytime soon. On the contrary, the world’s fastest-growing industry will only become more influential as countries around the world reckon with the fragility of highly globalized supply chains. Individuals who can demonstrate technical skills linked to semiconductor manufacturing will see their resumes stand out. Countries that can build up domestic semiconductor industries will have a potent weapon for the geopolitical competition of the 21st century.
Costa Rica is betting big on the latter.
Semiconductor Certification in Costa Rica With Full & Partial Scholarships
Recently announced semiconductor certification in Costa Rica from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica and the Costa Rica–United States Foundation for Cooperation (CRUSA) is committed to training the next generation of technicians to meet demand. In doing so, they’re removing one of the largest barriers to entry for hopeful students: cost. Workers who might not otherwise consider semiconductor manufacturing now have a pathway towards industry credentials — no matter what province they study in.
“The program’s goal is to increase the opportunities for young people and adults who want to enter the labor market in the assembly, test, and packaging sector of the semiconductor industry,” says Rosa Monge, Career Training Manager at Universidad Latina. The skills learned through this program have traditionally been expensive, closing the doors of the certification to anyone without financial help. Now, that’s all changed.
The Details on Certification for the Semiconductor Industry in Costa Rica
The program begins with eight modules covering:
- Technical English
- Socioemotional skills
- Manufacturing principles
- Fundamentals of statistics
- Electricity and electronics
- Semiconductor fabrication, packaging, assembly, and test
Together, these courses provide students with everything they need to develop job-ready skills for the semiconductor industry. Students will graduate from the program with digital credentials detailing their specific accomplishments — credentials that can’t be forged and are easily verified by would-be employers.
While technical expertise is important, CRUSA and Universidad Latina know that job-ready skills require more than just technical expertise. By offering training in technical English language skills as well as the soft skills employers universally say they want, graduates will be ready for the workforce from day one.
Preparing for a Career With Certification in Semiconductors
Students who are accepted to the program will be eligible for either full or partial scholarships. Whoever is granted a partial scholarship will pay less than half of the total cost. With the first stage of the program accepting 25 students total, CRUSA and Universidad Latina de Costa Rica plan to eventually expand this program to offer 65 scholarships.
Because requirements for the program are limited to having a computer with internet and passing an English language proficiency test at the A2 level, the scholarships are open to a wide variety of applicants from:
- High school students considering a technical career
- Workers from other industries hoping to switch fields
- People looking to start a new career in advanced manufacturing
Learn more about Scholarship Opportunities in Costa Rica
Those who are comfortable with distance learning by watching pre-recorded coursework will find the semiconductor certification in Costa Rica to be a great fit. Students do not need prior experience in the field to earn a scholarship — but they should be committed to seeing the program through to completion.
Give Rural Students a Fair Chance
Unlike many other technical training programs in Costa Rica, students from outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) will be given preferential treatment during the application process. That includes applicants who live in:
- Economically disadvantaged areas
- Underserved communities
- Anywhere outside of San José and the surrounding provinces
“We believe that talent exists outside of the GAM,” Monge told Emerging Worlds. “We want to motivate talented people who live anywhere in the country to join the program.” This ensures that students from rural communities, or those who simply can’t afford to study in Costa Rica’s coastal urban centers, will have the chance to obtain cutting-edge skills without skipping a beat.
Certification With Real Value
Badges earned through semiconductor industry certification in Costa Rica are issued on the Credly platform. That means they’re machine-readable Verifiable Credentials, ready to be shared on social media like LinkedIn or a personal website. Anyone hoping to hire graduates from the program can check to ensure their credentials are legitimate — and know that they are the second they see them.
Semiconductor industry certification in Costa Rica from Universidad Latina is a program with benefits that extend far beyond the individuals who enroll. By increasing the number of talented professionals, certificates raise the value of the entire Costa Rican workforce and develop talent across the country, CRUSA and Universidad Latina are making a strategic investment in the future of Costa Rica’s role in global semiconductor manufacturing.
