China and El Salvador’s Relationship May See $4 Billion in Trade

Contact the Central American Group to explore the foreign investment options in El Salvador and Costa Rica.

Chinese Ambassador to El Salvador, Zhang Yanhui, stated that China and El Salvador could see $4 billion dollars in bilateral trade by the end of 2026. This shows the relationship is not only political, but also encompasses robust trade. Businesses and infrastructure have also grown. Educational opportunities and technology are being taught and provided to El Salvador from China.

We don’t know for sure if total trade will reach $4 billion by the end of the year. Similarly, we don’t know how many new investments will come to El Salvador because Chinese businessmen and women are visiting the country to explore. We need to learn more about this relationship to understand what will ultimately happen.

What is driving bilateral trade?

El Salvador is continuing to buy many things from China. As mentioned by Zhang, among those products are building supplies and equipment. Tractors, solar panels, and electric cars are being imported by El Salvador. These are things that the country’s businesses and people can benefit from. This is because these items can be bought at lower prices from China. The Ambassador states that “these products are good, attractive, and cheap” in his translation. “Having the ability to purchase items for less can help out many businesses.” But we don’t know whether the amount of money El Salvador will spend on trade will help both countries.

Furthermore, the ambassador mentioned that El Salvador has a trade deficit with China. He went on to say that El Salvador needs to import these products. We do not have the value of goods that El Salvador will be importing from and exporting to China in 2026. Because of this, we don’t know how big the deficit will be this year.

 New Investments May Come

As stated before, trade is only one aspect of the China and El Salvador relationship. Business people are traveling to China and to El Salvador to learn about what opportunities are available to each country.

China believes that there will be more investments because El Salvador has great public safety laws, incentives, and political stability. There are many reasons why someone would want to invest in a country. Maybe they think they will profit from their business being located in that country. We will see if any Chinese companies decide to invest in El Salvador.

Once we know more about who is investing in El Salvador, we can better understand what businesses will be able to grow. If there are new companies moving into the country, it could help the economy significantly.

More Infrastructure Has Been Built

There is already some infrastructure that China has helped build in El Salvador. This includes

  • The National Library of El Salvador (BINAES)
  • The La Libertad Pier
  • Sunset Park.

Some of these projects are currently being worked on. The water treatment plant in Ilopango is currently being tested, while El Salvador’s new National Stadium and International Center for Fairs and Conventions (CIFCO) are currently being built. El Salvador’s President said the new stadium is 70% complete.

When these new buildings are finished, they will open up more areas for Salvadorans to enjoy, as well as for visitors who may come to El Salvador to tour these places. Jobs can also be created during the construction of these new buildings.

We will have to see what impact these new buildings will have on El Salvador. Once we have more information about the cost of these structures, we can see if it was worth it for the country.

Providing Education to El Salvador

Another thing China has done for El Salvador is provide technology to children from kindergarten through high school. They have donated around 340,000 tablets and computers to distribute to students.

China also gives out 35 scholarships a year to students who want to go study in that country. These scholarships provide students with airfare, lodging, and medical insurance. They can study anything from AI to Civil Engineering and Railway Management.

Two Salvadoran students are now learning Nuclear Engineering from the International Atomic Energy Agency and China. This could open up more job opportunities for Salvadorans once they finish their schooling.

China and El Salvador Have Grown Together

There are many more ways that China and El Salvador have grown as countries. The former has provided El Salvador with food and fertilizer twice. Officials have visited China and spoken with that country’s leaders. There have been direct conversations between President Nayib Bukele and President Xi.

We will have to see if these countries meet their goal of $4 billion dollars in trade this year. How much will El Salvador be exporting to China? Can the country grow its businesses and sell more products to China?

Are the businesses that are visiting El Salvador going to invest in the country? How much will all of these new buildings cost, and what will they bring to the country?

We will learn more about the relationship between China and El Salvador in the coming months and years.

Conclusion

China and El Salvador have multiple aspects to their relationship. They have grown together in many areas, and there is hope that this will continue to happen. Only time will tell what more China can do for El Salvador and what El Salvador can offer China.
